Information for Prospective Graduate Students

The Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan accepts applications for admission to graduate study for the fall term of each year only. Applications are accepted until December 15 for admission the following fall. The required method for submission of applications is via the Rackham Graduate School online application web site.

You should be prepared to provide the following:

  • Completed application and application fee (online)
  • TOEFL or MELAB scores as appropriate
  • Personal Statement (online)
  • Statement of Purpose (online)
  • Three letters of recommendation (online, if possible)
  • Writing Sample (online)
  • Scores on the (general) Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Information about the GRE including locations and dates of the administration of the test is available at:

  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended to both the Department and to the Horace H. Rackham Graduate School.
  • Materials not submitted online, must be sent, certified mail, to the Department as a complete package by December 15.

If you received a degree from a non-US institution, you should also be prepared to provide:

  • Official documentation of all courses taken and grades received (transcripts/records) from each undergraduate or postgraduate institution attended issued in the original language and with a certified English translation.
  • Official certification of degrees and dates awarded, issued in the original language and with a certified English translation.
  • TOEFL scores (students are exempt if the language of instruction is English exclusively at the institution from which they graduated).

Please note that students are now required to apply via the Rackham Graduate School's web site at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/Admis/prosp/apply.html. You are responsible for collecting all materials, including transcripts and letters of recommendation (if not submitted online) in signed and sealed envelopes. Submit your application package directly to the Department of Political Science. You are fully responsible for the submission of a complete application. You must send your application via FedEx, DHL, certified USPS, or UPS to ensure delivery. Failure to submit all the information and materials required could result in your application not being considered.
