Joint Graduate Degree Programs In addition to the Ph.D. in Political Science, students may apply for admission into joint programs in Public Policy (Ph.D.), Social Work and Social Science (Ph.D.), and Law and Politics (J.D., M.A.), or may, with the guidance of a faculty from both units and approval of the Graduate School, design an interdepartmental Ph.D. program. Those applying for joint degrees in Social Work, Public Policy or Law must first apply and be admitted to that unit of the University. See below for more details on each program.
Law and Politics
This joint degree program is designed to welcome students who are already students at the Law School. Before you apply for admission to the joint M.A. program, you will need to complete at least two graduate-level courses in Political Science. You will need a letter of recommendation from one of your Political Science professors as part of the application for admission to our program. Effectively, this means an application submitted during your second year in the law program. You should plan on submitting a Rackham (paper) application and three letters of recommendation, including the one from a professor in our program with whom you have taken a class. GRE scores are not required if you are submitting LSAT scores; you may substitute your LSAT scores instead of GRE scores. Include a writing sample, statement of purpose, all transcripts, and a resume with your application. If appropriate, Political Science will count two courses in your other field as cognates. Please note that the formal program is for a J.D and M.A. Please contact the Department of Political Science before applying (polisci@umich.edu). Any additional questions that you may have can be submitted by e-mail, law.dual.degrees@umich.edu. FAQ
Public Policy
The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the Political Science Department of the University of Michigan have developed a joint degree program that links the existing doctoral program in political science to a program that requires a more focused examination of public policy. The program is designed to enable graduate students to combine training in the theoretical and methodological traditions of Political Science with additional training in public policy. Students must apply to the Ford School of Public Policy (FSPP) and be accepted by the admissions committees of the Political Science Department and the School of Public Policy. GRE scores are required. Students will be supervised by the Ford School in collaboration with the Department of Political Science. The degree earned will be a Ph.D. in Political Science and Public Policy. FAQ
Social Work and Social Science
The Doctoral Program in Social Work and Social Science at Michigan is an interdepartmental degree program leading to a Ph.D. degree in Social Work and Political Science. The Doctoral Program is designed to prepare students for various careers in research and teaching, and certain types of policy development responsibilities in the social welfare field. It focuses primarily on research, knowledge development, and on applying social science theories and methods to solving social problems. It is a flexible program and encourages students to take advantage of UM's rich scholarly and research resources while pursuing their own interests. Close working relationships with faculty in the context of opportunities for research and teaching assistantships are an integral part of the program. Students must apply to the School of Social Work. GRE scores are required for all applicants. For more information on this joint program, please go to http://www.ssw.umich.edu/prospective/doctoral/overview/. Any questions can be submitted by e-mail, ssw.phd.info@umich.edu, or phone, (734) 763-5768.
