U.S. News and World Report has consistently rated the University of Michigan as one of the top political science programs in the country. This ranking is based upon peer evaluations of the scholarly innovations and achievements of department members and on their ability to disseminate this information to a wide audience of undergraduates, graduates, and professionals.

The graduate program in Political Science at the University of Michigan is primarily a Ph.D. program intended to develop scholars who manifest a high level of excellence in teaching and research as professional social scientists. It is distinguished by a wide variety of areas of specialization and ample opportunity to tailor programs to fit the needs and interests of individual students. Although no separate Masters program exists within the Department of Political Science, the opportunity to earn an M.A. is available. The graduate curriculum is organized around a set of core seminars and specialized courses in research methods which build upon each other, but there are several possible paths to the doctorate, and distinctive subjects and fields are encouraged.
