Jennings, now at U.C. Santa Barbara, was a member of the Political Science Department and the Institute for Social Research from 1963 to 1981 and then from 1984 to 1996, during which time he held a joint faculty appointment at U.C. Santa Barbara. He specializes in the areas of political socialization, gender and politics, political participation, and research design and data collection. Jennings is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and served as president of the American Political Science Association and of the International Society of Political Psychology. His publications as author or co-author include: Community Influentials, The Image of the Federal Service, The Political Character of Adolescence, Governing American Schools, Generations and Politics, Parties in Transition, and Continuities in Political Action.
