Research Interests:

Mary Corcoran’s research focuses on (1) the race and ethnicity-based differences in women’s wages and employment, (2) on how welfare mothers’ employment has changed as a result of welfare reform, and on the intergenerational transmission of economic inequality. She is currently writing a book which compares trends in employment and earnings for African-American, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and non-Hispanic white women. A second project examines the extent to which physical health problems, psychological disorders, and domestic violence limit the ability of welfare mothers to work fulltime on a permanent basis. A third project examines the links between income, work, food insufficiency and health. A fourth project examines the extent to which growing-up in poor families and poor neighborhoods leads to idleness and low wages in early adulthood.
