Most of Professor Levine's research and publication in recent years centers attention on three issues: the relation of religion to social and political change, issues of democratization, and state society relations with emphasis on the evolution of civil society. His work on these issues is centered on Latin America, but with broader theoretical and comparative dimensions. He is currently working on two major projects: 1. a book on religion and politics in Latin America that addresses major transformations in the current century, including the impact of religious and political pluralism; 2. a collaborative project on the quality of democracy in Latin America, that examines theoretical and comparative issues, searches for better indicators, and incorporates a range of case studies. This will result in an edited volume in English and Spanish.
